I don't know why people shoot other people. All I can think is that it's plain xenophobia - the evil inherent, it seems, in humanity itself.

The fact that the people he shot weren't mirrors of the gunman's self identity was probably reason enough for the irrational hatred that comes from fear of the unknown. The fear that there is something not like you that actually exists, that maybe your beliefs aren't the only ones, or the only right ones, or maybe not right at all. Maybe somewhere you can't accept that there is a possibility that we are all judged in the end by how much good we do in the world, not by our religion, that you might not be as good of a person as you thought you were, or at least not entitled to things because of how you were born and raised.

Cthulu exists. We drive ourselves mad by looking at the fact that other living, rational beings are in some ways entirely alien to us, and by not being able to accept the existence of a completely different self inherent in humanity. We drive ourselves crazy not wanting to be the same species as someone of a different skin color or religion, and we hope not to drive ourselves crasy by not wanting to be the same species as a gunman.
